Passive Career Research
Savvy Job SearchHere’s a passive way to do some career research that allows you to tap into your intuition and hunches.
Keep a file folder called “Cool careers” or “Cool companies”. As you come across companies (or industries or even individual positions) that catch your attention, make note of them in your file. Tear out articles from magazines. Clip notes from your local business journal. When you say “I could do that” put it in your file.
The next step is to identify trends. Look for clues about the types of positions you’re drawn to, or the types of companies you find interesting. Look beyond the obvious – Identify niches, industry-specific conferences, competitors and complementary industries.
